Can Norman keep the group functional when the discover the Sphere lurking in the heart of the craft? Crichton's Sphere is an interesting take on the first contact with aliens story. Staying in cramped quarters, surrounded by the crushing depths of the sea where a small mistake could get them all killed, the pressures are incredible.
A team of scientists, recommended by Norman, and a group of navy personal are tasked with uncovering what is and, if anything is alive, how to communicate with it. A craft that has been down there for at least 300 years. A thousand feet beneath the ocean, something has been found. Now, he is about to put his hypothesis to the test. He said abject terror would be the result when humans were confronted with the unknown. Once upon a time, a younger Norman, desperate for grant money, wrote a report for the government about how to handle first contact with alien intelligence. It turns out to be something far stranger. So when he's escorted by the US Navy out to the South Pacific he assumes a plane has crashed into the ocean. He is often called out by the FAA to help survivors of plane crashes and their families deal with the aftermath. Norman Johnson is a psychologist specialized in how stress affects group dynamics. The complaint is if they're reading an uninterrupted string of numbers for several minutes when doing so imparts absolutely no meaningful information to the listener and the effect could've been better achieved by just saying there were a bunch of random numbers. An exciting thriller at the bottom of the sea! If the line were "Then some numbers popped up on the screen: 1, 5, 11, 15, 19, 30, 35, 323." then obviously nobody is complaining about that being read as is. I refer you to OP's description:īut instead he reads them all, 100s of numbers for 10 minutes straight. Uh, that's absolutely not the discussion anybody was having. If strings of numbers which take less than one line of one page bother you that much, I guess you should just should listen to faster-paced books. If a book includes a picture, would you have the audiobook narrator list the color of each pixel or would you have them simply describe the picture? I'm saying the numbers are more like an illustration than they're actually part of the text. We do not pay for audiobooks that re-write the original book. There is timing and spacing involved in writing as much as there is in visual-media.
The meaningless stream of numbers is a part of the book. It's much closer to the author's original intentionĪnd you know the author's original intention exactly how? Are you suggesting that you or anyone else could or even should re-write the book, but "better"? That's what it sounds like you're saying to me.
That long, indecipherable series of numbers is part of the story they want it to take that long. Even if there's no message in that number, they wanted you to go through the whole series of numbers. Probably the author's intent was for you to glance at it If you don't want the automoderator to comment on your post, just include the word "nobot" anywhere in it.
